Zakharova: Russia supports Kazakhstan’s efforts to make sustainable peace in the South Caucasus

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova commented on the meeting of the Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers in Almaty: “We welcome the talks on a peace treaty between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia on May 10 and May 11 in Almaty. This is another step toward sustainable peace and prosperity in the South Caucasus. We support Kazakhstan’s efforts in this direction, and, if necessary, we are ready to provide any support to our partners. It is important that the talks in Almaty be consistent with the complex of tripartite agreements between the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, which defined the road map of the process of normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations.”

Zakharova also touched on the issue of vandalism of the monument to the victims of the Great Patriotic War in Artsakh. She noted that Russia is in regular contact with Yerevan and Baku regarding the preservation of cultural heritage and urges “that war not be waged against monuments”.
