China calls on US to refrain from Congress visits to Taiwan

At a press briefing, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China Wang Wenbin said the U.S. should refrain from organizing visits of Congress members to Taiwan, but if Washington keeps pursuing that path, it will come to bear full responsibility for the consequences, RIA Novosti reports.

“China has always resolutely opposed any form of official contact between the U.S. and Taiwan, as well as Washington’s interference in Taiwan’s affairs in any form or under any pretext,” Wenbin said.

He added that the U.S. Congress is an integral part of the country’s government and must strictly follow the One China policy adopted by the U.S.

“If U.S. congressmen visit Taiwan, it will be a gross violation of the One China policy and the provisions of the Three Joint Communiqués between China and the U.S., and interference in China’s internal affairs, also harming people’s sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the People’s Republic of China,” Wenbin said.
