US Assistant secretary of state to visit Azerbaijan to highlight US support for peace treaty between Yerevan and Baku
Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O’Brien will visit Azerbaijan. He will meet with high-ranking Azerbaijani officials, including Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov to highlight progress in U.S.-Azerbaijan bilateral relations and U.S. support for a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan. O’Brien will also meet with members of civil society to reiterate the urgency of Azerbaijan’s adherence to international human rights obligations.
Meanwhile, commenting on O’Brien’s planned visit to Azerbaijan, Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State Matthew Miller said at a press briefing that the U.S. continues to engage in diplomacy to resolve a number of the outstanding issues in the region.
“That’s something we’ve been working on for some time. The assistant secretary regularly travels there,” Miller noted.
