Attempted military coup staged in Bolivia with plotter arrested
An unsuccessful military coup attempt was made in Bolivia. The units stationed in the streets of La Paz were later withdrawn, and the leader of the coup was arrested.
Military units loyal to Gen. Juan Jose Zuniga gathered in the central square of the country’s capital, where the presidential palace and the country’s parliament are located, rioting and storming the presidential building on the eve of Zuniga’s removal from the post of commander of the ground forces of the Bolivian Army.
Gen. Zuniga was arrested, and the president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, called the incident a coup attempt, appointing a new commander. Later, the Bolivian Ministry of the Interior reported nine victims.
