Iranian ambassador to Armenia: The form of Iran’s cooperation with Armenia depends on the Armenian Government

Iran’s policy with Armenia is principled, and all the new authorities of Iran act within this framework—something that all leaders of Iran have repeatedly mentioned, Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani told the press.

“We respect the territorial integrity of Armenia; we are against changes in internationally recognized borders or geopolitical changes. This principled approach will never change, regardless of who comes to power in Iran or Armenia,” the ambassador noted.

According to Sobhani, Armenia is a very important country for them and a good, honest neighbor, and the security of the two countries is intertwined.

In response to the question as to what steps Iran may take considering that despite the peace process, Azerbaijan is threatening Armenia with a new war, and the threats specifically refer to Syunik, Sobhani said that if the countries express a desire for peace, they should not speak to each other in the language of threats.

“As regards our form of cooperation with Armenia, it depends on the Armenian Government. We have expressed our readiness on the basis of mutual understanding. Whatever will be in the interests of both of our countries, we will cooperate with Armenia in every field”, the ambassador said.
