Yagi typhoon kills 14 and injures over 180 in northern Vietnam
At least 14 people were killed and more than 180 injured because of the Yagi typhoon in the north of Vietnam, the National Disaster Response and Search and Rescue Committee reported.
The capital Hanoi, the port cities of Cẩm Phả, Móng Cái, Haiphong, Haiphong, as well as the nearby northern provinces of Thái Bình, Hòa Bình and Hưng Yên were the most affected by the disaster. There, the disaster damaged more than 400 power transmission towers and 27 power substations, leading to forced power outages. More than 121,000 hectares of cultivated areas with rice and other agricultural crops were flooded, more than 5,000 fruit trees were damaged; 38 ships and fishing boats sank or disappeared in coastal areas.
Yagi typhoon approached the southern coast of China on Sept. 4 and moved toward Vietnam from there. Less than 24 hours later, it strengthened into a super typhoon. This means the wind speed inside exceeded 50 m/s.
