Australia has expanded sanctions against Iran citing human rights violations there. Five Iranian citizens have appeared on the country’s “black list”, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said.
“On the second anniversary of the tragic death of Mahsa Amini, the Australian government is imposing targeted economic sanctions and travel bans on five more Iranians, including senior security and law enforcement officials,” the official said.
The minister also noted that Australia has imposed targeted sanctions against 195 Iranian citizens and companies. “These measures demonstrate our determination to hold Iran accountable for human rights violations,” she said.
According to the official version, the police detained 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September 2022 for improperly wearing a hijab. During the interrogation, he had a heart attack and died. However, information was spread on social media that Amini was beaten by the police.
