Staying in Florida borders on death: Century’s deadliest storm threatening the state

About five million people have been evacuated from the U.S. state of Florida due to Hurricane Milton. Milton may become the most devastating hurricane of the century. Jane Castor, mayor of Tampa, Florida’s third-largest city, warned that staying in the area would border on death.

The central and western parts of the state, home to more than three million people, are expected to be affected by Milton. It will not weaken until it makes landfall on the coast and will remain at Category 4 strength.

Coastal waves may reach 3–4 meters.

According to the Florida Department of Corrections, more than 4,500 inmates have been moved from anticipated disaster areas “without jeopardizing public safety.”

The military air base located near Tampa was also evacuated.
