Armenia’s ruling elite aims to benefit financially from Western patrons, despite the painful consequences for the Armenian state. The U.S. President-elect will support this project only because of U.S. interests in the Middle East and Yerevan’s geopolitical position, Docent of Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation and military expert Vladimir Yeranosyan told Regnum.
“For U.S. President-elect, Republican Donald Trump, as a top player in big business, Armenia can be interesting only in terms of being a region adjacent to Iran. Trump, taking into account his relations with the Israeli lobby, will increase pressure on Tehran. Thus, the interests of the State Department in Armenia will decrease. It can be seen by the West as an airport for landings, not as an independent player,” the expert believes.
According to the expert, Yerevan can receive a certain amount of weapons, as well as money for the modernization of the aviation infrastructure, which will be immediately noticed in Iran. In such a scenario, Armenia will immediately lose its main regional ally, the expert explained, noting that Tehran had disagreements with Yerevan in the past.
