European officials criticize Charles Michel for traveling to Baku to meet Aliyev

Nathalie Loiseau, vice president of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with the Countries of the South Caucasus, made an X post referring to the visit of President of the European Council Charles Michel to Baku on the margins of the U.N. climate summit. “It’s time for Charles Michel to step down from the post of President of the European Council,” Loiseau noted.

Senator Valérie Boyer also expressed regret over Michel’s participation and subsequent comments: “It’s regrettable that European Council President Charles Michel shamelessly congratulates genocidal gas dictator Aliyev in Baku. What have Europeans done to deserve such representation? Beyond humiliation, this is a serious mistake,” Boyer wrote.

To remind, Charles Michel met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev during the U.N. climate summit in Azerbaijan, congratulating him on hosting COP29 and stating that the EU is ready to support all efforts to create a stable, peaceful, and prosperous Caucasus.
