Financial Times: Trump will not resolve the Ukrainian conflict through capitulation
Europe does not believe that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will resolve the Ukrainian conflict by forcing Ukraine into capitulation, which gives the European politicians “cautious optimism,” the Financial Times reports, citing its sources.
“Trump wants to solve this issue, but not at any cost. It cannot be through Ukraine’s capitulation,” a senior European official said.
According to the FT, there is a belief in the West that Trump might sign an agreement regarding security guarantees for Ukraine, without obligations regarding Kyiv’s membership in NATO. The agenda also includes the idea of emphasizing Ukraine’s “long-term path” toward EU membership.
In this regard, the FT notes that the “cautious optimism” among European leaders is related to Trump’s future stance on resolving the Ukrainian crisis.
