EU disappointed by Georgia’s decision to suspend membership negotiations
EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczynski stated that Georgia’s indifference toward the path of integration into the EU over the next four years and the government’s decision to temporarily suspend accession negotiations are extremely disappointing.
“We have opened the doors of the European Union to Georgia, Ukraine, and Moldova. Ukraine and Moldova are making progress. As for Georgia, we heard yesterday that it is not interested in pursuing the path of EU integration. This is a sovereign decision by the Georgian authorities, which is very disappointing,” Herczynski noted.
He said the Georgian people themselves must decide what kind of future they want for their country.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced the day before that Tbilisi would not begin negotiations with Brussels on EU membership until 2028 and would decline any budgetary grants from the EU during this period.
Following Kobakhidze’s announcement, mass protests began in Tbilisi.
