Bloomberg: Trump will deport 1 million people in the 1st round of deportations
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump plans to deport 1 million individuals as part of the first phase of his migrant expulsion policy, Bloomberg writes, referring to Trump’s advisors.
According to them, the priority group will include migrants who have committed crimes or have received final deportation orders without having been granted asylum.
Trump has already discussed the issue of migrants with the leaders of Mexico and El Salvador, though not in detail. Sources have informed the agency that the president-elect’s transition team is currently working informally with representatives of the Mexican and El Salvadoran authorities. These efforts aim to ensure that the new administration can quickly begin implementing one of the candidate’s key pre-election promises.
As the agency points out, Washington needs to secure agreements with third-party countries to accept the migrants, as a significant part holds citizenship from countries with which the U.S. has poor relations, such as Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. Mexico City has already stated that it is only ready to accept its own citizens in the case of deportations from the U.S. The governments of Mexico and El Salvador have not commented on requests from Trump’s representatives.
Previously, Trump has repeatedly stated in public addresses that, following his inauguration, he intends to carry out the largest operation to expel illegal migrants in American history. The migration crisis has become one of the key issues in the U.S. electoral campaign. Current President Joe Biden, a Democrat, will transfer presidential powers to Trump on January 20, 2025.
