American diplomats to visit Damascus

American diplomats are set to visit Damascus, the Financial Times writes, citing its sources. A senior official from the U.S. Department of State is expected to travel to Syria.

“In the coming days, the delegation will be led by Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf. This meeting will mark the first official personal contact between the U.S. and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS),” a source said.

This will be the first official visit by U.S. diplomats to Damascus in over a decade.
