US urges its citizens to leave Belarus immediately
The U.S. Department of State has urged its citizens to leave Belarus. The website says that U.S. citizens should refrain from traveling to Belarus, and those already there “should depart immediately.”
“U.S. citizens should regularly reevaluate possible departure plans in the event of an emergency. Border crossings with neighboring states are sometimes closed with little notice. Additional closures of crossing points along Belarus’ borders with Lithuania, Poland, Latvia, and Ukraine are possible,” reads the statement.
The work of the U.S. Embassy in Minsk was suspended on Feb. 28, 2022.
On the State Department’s order, the embassy’s employees were evacuated and its activities, including emergency services, were suspended. U.S. citizens in need of assistance are urged to contact U.S. embassies and consulates in neighboring countries.
