South Korean president arrested
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been successfully arrested on the second attempt after the National Assembly declared impeachment against him in December for attempting to impose martial law. The president has stated that he willingly agreed to appear for questioning.
This is unprecedented in the history of South Korea, as it marks the first time a sitting president, albeit temporarily stripped of powers, has been arrested.
After a prolonged resistance, law enforcement officials were able to transfer Yoon to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials for questioning.
In a brief video message before the interrogation, Yoon Suk Yeol stated that his arrest is illegal, but he has decided to cooperate to avoid bloodshed.
“Although this case is illegal, I chose to appear before the Corruption Investigation Office to prevent unnecessary bloodshed. However, this does not mean I agree with the bringing of this case,” he said.
Yoon also noted that the principle of the rule of law is being violated in the country, and that both the bodies involved in the investigation and the court that issued the arrest warrant did not have the right to act.
