Viktor Sobolev: NATO bases will be deployed in Armenia, while Russian troops will be ‘thrown out’

The strategic cooperation agreement signed between Armenia and the U.S., along with the ambitious plans of the U.S. president-elect to expand his country’s influence, suggest that Donald Trump could become one of Russia’s most serious adversaries, Viktor Sobolev, a member of Russia’s State Duma Defense Committee, said.

Sobolev labeled this situation as extremely dangerous for Russia’s interests in the South Caucasus, stating that such agreements contradict Moscow’s geopolitical interests.

“Of course, this threatens Russia’s interests in the South Caucasus. After all, it is Trump who is currently in power in the U.S., not Biden who limps and falls down. He is a man who wants to make America great. And we absolutely have no need for that greatness. His involvement in Armenia is the first sign that he will undoubtedly be our enemy and, probably, the most serious one,” Sobolev noted, adding that NATO bases will be deployed in Armenia, while Russian troops will be “thrown out” from there.

“Our military bases are located in Gyumri and Yerevan. This is very serious. The entire southern direction needs to be strengthened,” the official stated.
