Washington may abandon its leadership of NATO
Donald Trump is considering relinquishing its leadership of NATO, the Daily Mail writes, without citing its source. The publication noted that since the founding of NATO in 1949, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe has always been a senior U.S. general.
“But in line with the U.S.’s insistence that European allies take more responsibility for Europe’s security, it also expects a British or French general to take up this position,” the newspaper writes.
In addition, given the recent steps and statements from the White House, the British government fears that the U.S. will begin to withdraw its troops from bases in Europe. Trump has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with NATO’s activities.
Even before his election, Trump threatened to withdraw the U.S. from NATO if European partners did not take greater financial responsibility for their security. After taking office, Trump announced his intention to ensure that NATO member countries in Europe increase their defense spending to 5% of GDP.
