Genesis Armenia welcomes EP resolution addressing International Criminal Court and Prosecutor
Genesis Armenia Think Tank welcomes the adoption of the European Parliament resolution on “Unlawful detention and sham trials of Armenian hostages, including high-ranking political representatives from Nagorno-Karabakh, by Azerbaijan”, which demands the immediate release of Armenian detainees, condemns inhumane treatment toward them, calls for an independent investigation, and seeks to hold accountable and impose sanctions on a number of officials.
Particularly commendable is the provision in the resolution that appeals to the International Criminal Court and the Chief Prosecutor to investigate cases related to the forced displacement, persecution, and ethnic cleansing of the Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh.
We consider important the statement by co-author of the resolution, Marina Mesure, where she said that “the only crime of these people is that they have defended their land, their people, and their rights. If we do not take any action now, it will send a clear message to Aliyev that he can continue what he is doing with Armenia without facing any consequences.”
We are hopeful that the adoption of such resolutions will lead to tangible outcomes.
