European Parliament members: Armenia deserves praise; Azerbaijan should seize the peace opportunity
We welcome the successful conclusion of negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the full text of the draft agreement on peace and the establishment of interstate relations, Members of the European Parliament said in a joint statement.
“The Armenian government deserves praise for this significant event, which followed its announcement that it has accepted Azerbaijan’s proposals regarding the last two unresolved articles and its readiness to sign the agreement as soon as possible. We believe that the Azerbaijani leadership will seize this historic opportunity to end decades of conflict and build a prosperous South Caucasus by signing and implementing the peace agreement reached during negotiations,” reads the statement.
The MEPs also encouraged further progress in border delimitation and the opening of regional communications based on the sovereignty and jurisdiction of the countries, reciprocity, and equality.
“In the same spirit, we believe that the Turkish government should support the ongoing positive developments in the region and reciprocate Armenia’s readiness to open the Armenian-Turkish border for the benefit of its citizens and the entire South Caucasus,” the MEPs added.
The statement was issued on behalf of David McAllister, Sergey Lagodinsky, Nils Ušakovs, Miriam Lexmann, and Dan Barna.
