Abbas Araghchi: Iran opposes any border changes or military interventions in the region

The Islamic Republic of Iran is against any border changes in the South Caucasus, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said during a joint press conference with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the signing of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and we hope that a final decision on the signing of that agreement will be made by both countries as soon as possible. We believe that this agreement is very important for peace and stability in the Caucasus, and it is also crucial for the development of economic relations. We hope these issues will be resolved soon. The risk of escalation exists in the region, and we hope that alongside the signing of this peace agreement, these risks will be minimized and we will witness stability in the region, which is in everyone’s interest,” Araghchi said.

He also noted that Iran opposes any military intervention aimed at resolving existing disputes in the region. “The issues of communication and the establishment of transit routes in the region are acceptable, but this must be under the sovereignty of the countries, and the territorial integrity and national laws of the countries must be respected,” the Iranian foreign minister noted.
