Overchuk: If Armenia is moving toward Europe, it will be necessary to reassess the entire complex of economic relations with this country
Armenia will not be able to “sit on two chairs.” It must choose between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union (EU), Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk said. Earlier, the Armenian Parliament had adopted a bill to begin the EU accession process in a second and final reading.
“I have read the text of the law that has been adopted. It is ‘for everything good and against everything bad,’ or completely general statements. This is Armenia’s domestic issue. In fact, we understand that both the EAEU and the EU have similar agendas. Therefore, the country must decide and make this choice. Because it is absolutely impossible to sit on two chairs at the same time,” Overchuk noted.
According to him, Armenia continues to actively work within the Eurasian Economic Union and has been making a positive contribution to Eurasian integration. “On our part, of course, we are closely monitoring these processes. We understand that if Armenia is moving toward Europe, then, accordingly, it will be necessary to reassess the entire complex of economic relations with this country, and unfortunately, this will impact the living standards of people in Armenia, which, of course, we would not want,” Russia’s deputy prime minister noted.
