Tarasov: The Armenian Parliament decision to join the EU is just barefaced politics
The Armenian Parliament has adopted a bill regarding the country’s intention to join the European Union. With this decision, the Armenian Parliament is attempting to blackmail Moscow, but the Parliament decision alone is not enough. A referendum should be held, and only then will the Parliament’s decision gain legal force, Stanislav Tarasov, an expert on the Middle East and Caucasus, said in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda.
“This is related to new elections and the current government’s demonstration of loyalty to specific powers. Moreover, Yerevan’s genuine concerns are of little interest to Europe,” the political scientist noted, adding that it is impossible for Yerevan to be part of two organizations simultaneously—economic and military-political—referring to organizations related to Russia, such as the CSTO and the EAEU.
In Tarasov’s opinion, Europe cannot offer anything to Armenia. Only Paris is trying to somehow assist Yerevan, for understandable reasons. The political scientist stated that according to Armenia’s Constitution, a nationwide referendum is necessary to approve decisions at this level. A nationwide vote will also serve as an assessment of the country’s internal political situation.
“The decision of the Armenian Parliament to join the EU is merely barefaced politics and a sense of self-preservation among a group of political figures,” Tarasov said.
