CIS foreign ministers to discuss border security issues facing member states

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will participate in the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of CIS countries in Almaty, as well as in a meeting with the foreign ministers of Central Asian countries.

According to Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova the ministers will summarize the results of the implementation of the consultation plan for foreign ministries within the CIS framework for 2024 and the action plan for enhancing cooperation among foreign affairs agencies. Some of the documents approved after the meeting will be presented for the approval of the heads of state and government of the CIS countries.

The topic of border security, as noted by Zakharova, will also be one of the main themes of the CIS Foreign Ministers’ Council meeting. It was noted that on March 13, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon signed an agreement regarding the state border in Bishkek, following nearly 23 years of negotiations over disputed territories. The CSTO noted that this event would contribute to improving security in the organization’s area of responsibility.

Another important step aimed at strengthening security in the CIS region was the agreement on the text of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Moscow welcomed this step and stated that it is ready to provide its territory for the signing of the document. At the same time, Russia expressed concern that despite positive news about the completion of the peace treaty draft, reports of increasing tensions along the border between the two countries are becoming more frequent.

Exchanges of views are also expected to take place on key international issues, aimed at coordinating and resolving them for the benefit of strengthening security and stability in the region.
