Disinformation Observatory: Armenia is among the top 5 countries targeted by Russian disinformation

A new study reveals that complex efforts are underway to spread disinformation in regions of strategic importance to the Kremlin, particularly in Eastern Europe.

Former Soviet and Balkan countries are the primary targets of the Kremlin’s Pravda disinformation network, according to recent findings by Disinformation Observatory.

The Center for Information, Democracy, and Citizenship at the American University in Bulgaria analyzed over 640,000 posts from the network between December 2024 and March 2025.

The study found that former Soviet and Balkan nations accounted for 52% of all posts, despite representing a disproportionately small segment of the populations in the countries analyzed.

The three most disproportionately targeted countries were Moldova, Latvia, and Estonia. Serbia and Armenia followed in fourth and fifth places, respectively. According to the report, Armenia was the subject of 11,274 such posts.

The top ten list is rounded out by Lithuania, Georgia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, and the Czech Republic.
