Tehran will give up highly enriched uranium in exchange for lifting of economic sanctions by US, says Iranian official

Iran is ready to sign a nuclear deal with certain conditions with President Donald Trump in exchange for lifting economic sanctions, Ali Shamkhani, a top adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, told NBC News.

Shamkhani said Iran would commit to never making nuclear weapons, getting rid of its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium which can be weaponized, and agreeing to enrich uranium only to the lower levels needed for civilian use. The website notes Shamkhani’s comments appear to be the clearest public statement yet on Iran’s expectations and willingness to reach a deal from the supreme leader’s inner circle.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said at a reception in Qatar on the occasion of his official visit that Iran can choose either a friendly or an unfriendly course of action regarding its nuclear program, and U.S. officials hope that Tehran will choose the former.

“The unfriendly path is the violent path, and I don’t want that. They have to move. They have to make that decision. That’s their decision,” Trump said.
