Damascus welcomes US decision to temporarily lift sanctions on Syria
Damascus has welcomed the decision by Washington to provide sanctions relief for Syria, according to a statement released by the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“We welcome the U.S. government’s decision to remove sanctions that have been imposed for years on Syria and its people. The lifting of sanctions is a positive step toward alleviating the humanitarian and economic suffering in the country. We extend our hand to anyone who wishes to cooperate with us on the basis of mutual respect and non-interference in our internal affairs. We believe that dialogue is the best path to building balanced relations that serve the interests of peoples and reinforce stability,” the ministry stated.
This follows recent news that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed documents suspending the sanctions package imposed on Syria in 2019 for a period of 180 days.
