US senator introduces bill to prevent Trump from declaring war on Iran

Vermont independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders has introduced legislation that could potentially prevent President Donald Trump from initiating a war with Iran.

“Today, I introduced a bill that aims to stop Trump from dragging us into an illegal war with Iran,” Sanders wrote on X. A statement attached to the post says that the legislation is designed to prohibit the President from using federal resources to fund a war with Iran unless Congress provides the appropriate authorization. According to Sanders’s statement, seven Democratic senators have joined the initiative. He added that another war in the Middle East could cost countless lives and trillions of dollars and only worsen the situation in the region. It is noted that Sanders first introduced a similar bill in January 2020, during Trump’s first presidential term, and was later supported by Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and former Senator Kamala Harris.

Earlier, citing its sources, Axios reported that the United States continues to oppose involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict unless Tehran attacks U.S. forces in the region. According to those sources, the U.S. has conveyed this stance to its Middle Eastern allies, hoping they will pass it on to Tehran and thus prevent the Islamic Republic from attacking U.S. forces stationed in the region.
