Horrific and divisive information campaign run against the Armenian people, Zakharova on situation in Armenia

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova has commented during a briefing on the reports circulating in pro-government Armenian media, claiming that opposition figures and even members of the clergy are “Kremlin agents.”

“It is they who write these things, but everyone is ashamed. First and foremost, this is a terrible information campaign against the Armenian people. It is causing division within society,” Zakharova noted.

She noted that the Church and spiritual values are precisely what have always united Armenians as a people, helping them overcome terrible hardships. However, now these values—the Church, religion, spiritual values—are being artificially turned into an apple of discord.

“All of this, for some reason, is being linked to Russia. What does Russia have to do with this?” Zakharova questioned, adding that such tactics are artificially poisoning the Armenian people. According to her, Russia is genuinely interested in the stability in brotherly Armenia and would like to see it develop and prosper based on high ideals and benefit.

Zakharova noted that Moscow supports the supremacy of law in Armenia—based on the Constitution—ensuring the rights and freedoms of its citizens, including religious freedoms.
