EU prepared to impose counter-tariffs on US imports, says Friedrich Merz

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has promised Washington a decisive response in the event of escalating the U.S.-EU trade war, noting that the United States should not underestimate the European Union’s willingness to react to increases in trade tariffs.

“The U.S. government should not underestimate our readiness to respond with mirror measures to the rise in tariffs,” Merz said.

He highlighted that the EU is prepared for such a step but remains hopeful that disagreements can be resolved through negotiations.

The German chancellor stated that he maintains continuous contact with U.S. President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“Our goal has always been to find a quick solution that will facilitate trade with the United States and allow us to reduce tariffs again,” Merz concluded.
