Poverty levels rising in EU countries

Over the past three years, at least 11 countries within the European Union have experienced an increase in poverty levels.

According to the latest data from Eurostat, in 2024, one in five EU citizens is at risk of poverty or social exclusion.

Bulgaria (30.3%), Romania (27.9%), and Greece (26.9%) reported the highest proportions of people at risk of poverty or social exclusion.

France also recorded concerning figures, with the poverty rate reaching its highest level since 1996. Data from the National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) shows that the rate increased from 14.4% in 2022 to 15.4% in 2023.

At the EU level, more than one in five individuals living in families with children face a slightly higher risk of poverty or social exclusion compared to those without children.
