Caucasus has historically served as strategic security buffer for Iran, says Velayati
The Caucasus has historically played the role of a strategic security buffer for Iran, Ali Akbar Velayati, Advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader on international affairs, wrote on X.
Velayati noted that the Caucasus has served this role since the time of the Persian king Cyrus the Great of the Achaemenid dynasty.
“According to Herodotus, the Caucasus has always been the frontier of Iran’s security since the time of Cyrus, and he built a rampart there to prevent invasions by barbaric tribes,” Velayati wrote.
