Russia urges prevention of escalation over Iran’s nuclear program
Russia considers it important to prevent a new escalation over Iran’s nuclear program, prioritizing constructive dialogue between the parties and avoiding renewed conflict, the country’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
“We consider it essential to prevent a new escalation regarding the Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear program, which, as demonstrated by the external aggression against Iran this June, would have serious consequences for international peace and security,” reads the statement.
The statement stressed that the immediate priority is to resume constructive dialogue among the involved parties and to seek collective solutions that can prevent a new crisis.
On Aug. 28, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany notified the United Nations Security Council about triggering the mechanism to restore international sanctions against Iran that were lifted under the 2015 nuclear agreement. However, the sanctions do not come into effect immediately; a draft resolution on continuing the suspension must be voted on by the Security Council. If the resolution is not adopted within 30 days, the sanctions will be reinstated.
