Any hasty, uncalculated move would be catastrophic, says Gasparyan on military reforms
The winner on the changing world military map is the one who leads in the technological race, modernizes rapidly, makes the system more disciplined, diversifies the economy, and ensures propaganda is well-founded and effective. Without real resources behind it, propaganda becomes a bubble that will inevitably burst, Political analyst Abraham Gasparyan, director of Genesis Armenia Think Tank/Foundation, said in the latest episode of his program, addressing the draft proposal to shorten mandatory military service.
According to Gasparyan, the authorities are doing everything to prevent Armenia and the Armenian people from ever restoring the army’s former combat capability or being able to address security issues and carry out objective tasks at historically and politically appropriate moments, specifically neutralizing existential threats to the Armenian people in the South Caucasus.
Gasparyan presented international examples of professional army formation and examined countries that are currently leaders in the arms sector.
“Our country faces a real, immediate territorial threat. Raising the issue of transition to a professional army now carries serious risks that could lead to irreversible heavy losses. Under different circumstances, with different leadership quality and national vision, I would fully support the creation of a professional army staffed with volunteer, mobilizable, technologically advanced officers of high moral, psychological, and combat readiness, guided by national-state thinking, alongside a powerful reserve force,” Gasparyan said. “We could fully transition to such a system in at least 5–10 years, if not a little longer. Any hasty, uncalculated move outside this logic would be catastrophic.”
