As of now candidates running for Yerevan Mayor
The process of registration of parties standing for the
Yerevan Council of Elders elections started on Aug. 3. To remind, the elections
are scheduled for Sept. 17. However, no political force has submitted an
application to the CEC to stand for the elections yet.
Despite this, in the past few days, a number of political
forces announced their intention to run for the elections.
The ruling Civil Contract party announced its decision to
run for the elections in March, 2022, Tigran Avinyan’s name being the first on
the list.
The Country of Living party’s candidate for the post of the
mayor is Leader of the party Mane Tandilyan. At one of the party’s congresses,
Mane Tandilyan suggested turning the elections into an “impeachment vote
against the authorities”.
The Bright Armenia party announced that Davit Khazhakyan’s
name will be the first on their list.
Today, Andranik Tevanyan made a video near the Statue of
Mother Armenia and noted that the Mother Armenia popular movement will run for
the Yerevan Council of Elders elections. He is an MP from the NA Armenia
alliance. However, the Armenia alliance has not considered running for the
elections.
Former Mayor of Yerevan Hayk Marutyan officially announced
his decision to stand for the elections for the first time today. His name will
head the list of the National Progress Party of Armenia party.
Former Head of the Administrative District of Kentron Viktor
Mnatsakanyan is nominated by the Victory party.
Former Minister of Justice, member of the party council of
the Hanrapetutyun (“Republic”) party Artak Zeynalyan is another
candidate for the mayor’s post.
The Strength of the Fatherland party, led by Tigran
Arzakantsyan announced its decision to stand for the elections. First, it was
announced that the co-founder of the party, Arzakantsyan’s wife Natalia
Rotenberg’s name would head the list of their candidates. However, two days
later, the party’s governing body changed its decision. Thus, Nelly Harutyunyan’s
name will be the first on the list.
In July, the For Social Justice party announced its
intention to run for the Council of Elders elections.
The European Party of Armenia initially announced its
decision to nominate songwriter Ruben Hakhverdyan. However, later they changed
their mind. Thus, the party will stand for the elections in alliance with the
Social Democrat Hunchakian Party (SDHP). Head of Armenian Euro-Atlantic Centre
for Integration, sociologist Karen Sargsyan will head the list.
The deadline for submitting the applications is Aug. 13.
From Aug. 13 to Aug. 18, the registration will be conducted. The election
campaign will start on Aug. 23 and will last till Sept. 15.
The previous Yerevan Council of Elders elections were held
on Sept. 23, 2018. The Council of Elders assumed power on Oct. 10, 2018 and
will give up power on Oct. 10, 2023.
