Armenia’s actions don’t yet contradict EAEU commitments, says Russia’s foreign ministry
Yerevan’s recent steps do not contradict the obligations it has undertaken within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Mikael Aghasandyan, director of the First CIS Department at Russia’s Foreign Ministry, told TASS.
He noted that Armenia’s statements about its intention to join the European Union are, for now, only “political declarations.”
“At the same time, it has been repeatedly stated, including by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk, that dual membership in both unions is impossible given their nature,” Aghasandyan said.
“Armenia’s current actions do not contradict its obligations within the EAEU. We will continue to assess practical steps. No one prohibits Armenia from cooperating with other countries—indeed, all EAEU members do so. What matters is that such cooperation does not run counter to the commitments undertaken within the Union. For now, that is not the case,” the diplomat said.
According to him, Armenia’s participation in the Union has not changed in nature and remains constructive. The country “is actively working within the EAEU and sees benefits from its membership.”
“Yes, trade has declined, but this is due to an unstable situation. Previously there was growth, but now everything is returning to a more natural course. Looking at the dynamics since 2015, when Armenia joined the EAEU, its trade with partners has increased sharply,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry representative stated.
