Tehran deems UN Security Council sanctions decision illegal
Tehran has denounced the United Nations Security Council’s decision on sanctions against Iran, calling it illegal, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“The step taken today by the European trio in the Security Council is unlawful, unjustified, and provocative, and it seriously undermines ongoing diplomatic efforts,” reads the statement.
The ministry stressed that Tehran reserves the right to respond accordingly.
“Iran believes that if international sanctions against the country are reinstated, responsibility for the consequences will rest with the United States and the three European states—France, Germany, and the United Kingdom—that initiated the process,” the statement added.
On Sep. 19, the UN Security Council rejected a draft resolution aimed at preventing the resumption of sanctions against Iran. Russia, China, Algeria, and Pakistan voted in favor of the draft. Nine members, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, opposed it, while two abstained. As a result, sanctions outlined in earlier Security Council resolutions have been reinstated.
