Kim Jong Un recalls ‘good memories’ with Trump
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said he retains “good memories” of his meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump, RBC reports. The two leaders last met in 2019.
Kim noted that he is ready to negotiate with Washington if the United States abandons what he called an obsession with North Korea’s denuclearization and accepts the reality in the country.
“If the U.S. stops clinging to the empty idea of forcing us to give up our nuclear program and decides instead to pursue peaceful coexistence, we will have no reason to refuse talks,” he said.
At the same time, Kim ruled out the possibility of ever negotiating with Seoul, stressing that North Korea has no intention of seeking reunification with the South.
In August, Trump told South Korean President Lee Jae Myung that he hopes to meet Kim Jong Un before the end of the year.
“Someday we will meet — I’m really looking forward to it,” Trump said, adding that during his second presidential term the U.S. “had no problems with North Korea.” He described his relationship with Kim as “very good.”
For his part, the South Korean president urged his American counterpart to support peace efforts on the Korean Peninsula. Half-jokingly, he added: “I look forward to your meeting with Kim Jong Un, and also to the construction of Trump Tower in North Korea and playing golf there. I’m sure he will be waiting for you.”
