No plans to withdraw Russian 102nd military base, says Russia’s ambassador to Armenia

Russia’s ambassador to Armenia, Sergey Kopirkin, stated that the withdrawal of the Russian 102nd military base is not on the agenda of bilateral relations between Armenia and Russia. He made the remarks in an interview with the newspaper Syunyats Yerkir.

“The withdrawal of the 102nd military base is not part of the bilateral agenda. The Armenian side has clearly stated this at all levels. The Russian military presence remains a vital pillar of Armenia’s security system and an important factor for regional stability. At the same time, our servicemen do not pose any threat to anyone in the region,” Kopirkin stated.

He also recalled that the “Agreement on the Russian Military Presence in Armenia” was originally signed in Moscow on March 16, 1995, for a period of 25 years, automatically extended every five years.
