Pope Leo XIV to visit Turkey on 1st foreign trip

Pope Leo XIV will make his first international trip to Turkey. On Nov. 28, he will visit the city of Iznik in Bursa Province to attend celebrations marking the 1700th anniversary of the Ecumenical Council, Ermenihaber reports.

The late Pope Francis had expressed his wish to personally take part in the anniversary and requested before his death that his successor ensure attendance at the event.

Tens of thousands of foreign visitors are expected to travel to Iznik for the historic papal visit, with the celebrations to be broadcast live by numerous international media outlets.

This will be the fifth papal visit to Turkey since 1967.
