Archbishop Mikayel Ajapahyan sentenced to 2 years in prison
Archbishop Mikayel Ajapahyan, Primate of the Diocese of Shirak has been sentenced to two years in prison.
At the previous hearing, the prosecutor requested a 2.5-year sentence for the archbishop.
A few days ago, the court had already found Ajapahyan guilty, leaving the preventive measure unchanged.
“Don’t think about that, everything will be fine,” Ajapahyan commented on the court’s ruling.
“We saw what gross violations the judge committed to reach this outcome. We predicted that the court would issue a decision to keep Archbishop Mikayel Ajapahyan behind bars until the elections. This is more than obvious,” lawyer Ara Zohrabyan said after the session.
The defense insists that Ajapahyan’s case has a political undertone.
