UN Committee Against Torture expresses serious concern over detention of 23 Armenians in Baku amid Red Cross absence
During an interactive dialogue with the Chair of the UN Committee Against Torture, the Chair of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture, and the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee, Armenia’s Permanent Mission to the UN reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the universal and absolute eradication of torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
“Serious concern was expressed that in some countries, credible reports of torture continue to emerge in places of detention and in the context of armed conflicts, often driven by political motives, which constitute a clear violation of international law. Reference was made to the latest conclusions of the U.N. Committee Against Torture, in which the Committee voiced grave concern over the continued detention of 23 Armenians.
These concerns remain highly relevant, as the situation continues to endanger the rights, safety, and dignity of the affected individuals, particularly given the absence of engagement by international organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC),” the Armenian Mission’s statement said.
