Vardan Ghukasyan remanded in custody for 2 months
Vardan Ghukasyan has been placed in custody for a period of two months, according to a ruling of the Anti-Corruption Court.
Yesterday security forces stormed the Gyumri City Hall to detain Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan. The Anti-Corruption Committee announced that eight individuals had been arrested on charges of giving or receiving large-scale bribes involving a group of officials.
Hours later, Ghukasyan himself left the City Hall building and approached the law enforcement vehicle. At that time, a scuffle broke out between police surrounding the City Hall and the mayor’s supporters, resulting in the detention of 23 people.
Before being transferred to court, Ghukasyan was held at the Anti-Corruption Committee. Although the agency had already submitted a request for his pretrial detention, Ghukasyan stated that he does not accept the charges brought against him.
