Trump orders nuclear test resumption in US
U.S. President Donald Trump has said that resuming nuclear tests in the United States after a 30-year moratorium is justified, given that other countries are conducting similar tests. He made the remarks to reporters on his way back from South Korea. CNN reports that he also expressed a desire for eventual nuclear disarmament.
“We have more nuclear weapons than anyone. We’re not testing, but since others are doing it, I think it will be appropriate for us as well,” Trump said. “They all seem to be testing nuclear weapons.”
Trump did not provide details on when or where the U.S. tests would take place, noting only that the country “has testing sites.” “There will be an announcement later,” he said.
At the same time, Trump stated that he “would like to see nuclear disarmament.”
“We are already negotiating with Russia on this issue, and if we do something, China will join us,” the U.S. president said.
“Due to the testing programs of other countries, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our nuclear weapons on an equal footing. This process will begin immediately,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He also noted that Russia possesses the world’s second-largest nuclear arsenal, while “China is third, but in five years they will catch up.”
