Ararat Mirzoyan on Aliyev’s remarks about Lake Sevan
Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan commented on Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s statement about Lake Sevan, clarifying that Aliyev’s remark referred to Tsarist-era maps, not a claim that there is no Lake Sevan, there is Lake Goycha.
“In any case, this is not the most constructive wording and we would not say that it fits into the peace narrative. I can also say that there are Tsarist maps where Lake Sevan is mentioned. I don’t want to go further back in history, because an uncomfortable situation may arise and we may see Armenian place names in a slightly wider area. Let’s talk about the real Armenia, today’s borders, the borders recognized by Azerbaijan,” Mirzoyan said.
Regarding unconstructive narratives, Mirzoyan also urged attention to the Alma-Ata agreement on mutual recognition of borders, emphasizing that it has been signed and carries significantly more weight.
