BBC apologizes to Trump over edited documentary

The BBC has issued an apology to U.S. President Donald Trump over a documentary in which portions of his speech were edited, Reuters reports.

At the same time, the news agency rejected Trump’s claim for compensation, stating that there is no legal basis for such a claim.

“A letter from BBC lawyers was sent to President Trump’s legal team in response to a letter received on Sunday,” a BBC spokesperson said.

The documentary, which aired on the BBC’s “Panorama” news program just before the U.S. presidential election in 2024, spliced together three parts of Trump’s speech on Jan. 6, 2021, when his supporters stormed the Capitol.

The outlet also announced that it would no longer broadcast the documentary on its platforms.

Earlier, Trump’s lawyers had threatened to sue the BBC if the broadcaster did not issue a denial, apologize, and pay compensation. Trump’s legal team had planned to seek $1 billion from the BBC through the lawsuit.
