Norayr Hakobyan elected mayor of Masis: Who is he?

At today’s extraordinary session of the Masis municipal council, Norayr Hakobyan was unanimously elected mayor of the community. Hakobyan is a member of the David Hambardzumyan Alliance faction and had previously served as the first deputy mayor.

The Civil Contract party did not nominate a candidate.

Hakobyan served as Masis deputy mayor from December 2016 until resigning in 2021.

“We will meet soon — with new programs and plans…,” he wrote at the time.

Some time later, he again took up the position of deputy mayor of Masis.

On Oct. 23, Masis mayor and prime ministerial candidate David Hambardzumyan was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months in prison and subsequently taken into custody.

Days later, on Oct. 31, Hambardzumyan submitted a request from the Nubarashen penitentiary facility asking for his mandate as a municipal council member to be terminated.
