Rubio announces significant progress in talks with Ukraine
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that “significant progress” has been made in negotiations on a U.S.-proposed plan aimed at halting Russia’s war against Ukraine. A “refreshed and refined framework document for peace” has been developed, the BBC reports.
Negotiations will continue this week. Rubio stated that the talks may not be completed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s Thursday deadline.
Rubio has left Geneva and is returning to Washington following high-level meetings on a peace plan for Ukraine, CNN reports, citing a senior official from the U.S. State Department.
“There is still work to be done,” he said after meeting with Ukrainian and European negotiators.
The U.S. secretary of state added that technical-level discussions would continue, expressing optimism that “we will achieve our goal within a very reasonable timeframe — very soon.”
He described these talks as perhaps the best the United States has held with Ukraine since Trump’s return to power.
Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, wrote on Telegram: “I want to confirm that we had a very productive first meeting with the distinguished American delegation. We made very good progress and are moving toward a just and lasting peace.”
