No viable alternatives to Russian proposals for new Armenian nuclear plant, Galuzin says
There are no viable alternatives to Russian proposals for the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Armenia, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin told Izvestia.
“We have presented the Armenian side with a detailed package of proposals. Rosatom is ready to begin the project as soon as possible, taking into account the wishes of our Armenian partners. Given the availability of reliable, proven technologies, as well as attractive financial terms — including construction, future operation, and the necessary training of specialists — there are no viable alternatives,” the diplomat stated.
Galuzin added that Moscow intends to continue acting as a guarantor of Armenia’s energy security.
“We intend to continue responsibly fulfilling our role as a guarantor of Armenia’s energy security and to support the development of the country’s nuclear industry. As the experience of some European countries, including major powers like Germany, shows, abandoning nuclear energy can prove costly for the national economy,” the official said.
He also noted that Russia and Armenia have extensive experience in cooperation on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
“Our nuclear scientists come from the same Soviet ‘school’ and understand each other well. Our specialists are currently implementing a comprehensive program to ensure the plant can operate reliably and efficiently until 2036. We are confident that, with active support from Yerevan, all work will be completed on time,” Galuzin stated.
