Tevan Poghosyan: Summoning Kopirkin for consultations was a symbolic gesture, as they wanted to show that there is a problem

Summoning Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin to Moscow for consultations is a symbolic gesture, political scientist Tevan Poghosyan told ABC media.

According to him, probably some kind of agreement was reached during the meeting between Putin and Pashinyan on May 8, and the failure to meet it is the reason for summoning Kopirkin.

“In diplomacy, this means that something should have been done over the course of two weeks, which has not been done. Summoning the ambassador for consultations is a symbolic gesture; thus, they want to show that there is a problem. This is a diplomatic tool as well. I’m sure that they know Kopirkin’s phone number in Moscow, and if they had a certain thing to discuss with him, they wouldn’t have demonstratively said we’re calling him back,” Poghosyan noted.

According to the expert, the reason for this step should be looked for in Pashinyan’s recent statement, where he said that a third country participated in the 2020 war as well.

“We have been witness to several similar situations in the past few months: Turkey recalled its ambassador from Israel, France from Azerbaijan, etc. The reason was the failure to fulfill the agreements reached and the taking of a demonstrative step in terms of diplomatic instruments. Any consultation can be conducted by phone, through social networks, on a video call, because even international meetings are held on a video call. In diplomacy, this phenomenon is a special demonstrative message about something,” Poghosyan said.
